               c. Distorted leaves, branches, or trunks

               Leaf cupping (leaves folded, cupped or distorted) – aphids, psyllids

               Leaf or twig galls (galls can be high variable in the appearance) –gall wasps and flies

               Bark rippling or cracking – moth and beetle borers




               d. Dieback of shoots, twigs, branches

               Shoot dieback –tip moths

               Branch dieback –wood-boring beetles and moths, twig girdlers, root feeding beetle larvae, scales




               e. Products of insects

               Honeydew and sooty mold (sticky, sugary substance excreted by certain insect; sooty mold grows

                 on honeydew) –aphids, soft scales, leafhoppers, treehoppers, whiteflies, psyllids, mealybugs

               Fecal spots –lacebugs, thrips, some plant bugs and leaf beetles

               Webbing –tent caterpillars, webworms, spider mites

               Protective coverings –bagworms, case bearers

               Fluffy white wax –adelgids, mealybugs, some aphids, some scale insects, some planthoppers

               Soft or hard white, brown, gray to black wax covers –armored scales
