are no longer maintained. Cultivars of current importance are ‘Solo’ (Hawaii and Brazil), ‘Wai-
manolo’ and ‘Sunrise Solo’ (Hawaii), ‘Miradol’ (Cuba and Belize). ‘Cariflora’ was developed by

the University of Florida (Homestead) some years ago, but is not widely planted at present.

‘Exotika’ was developed in Malaysia by crossing ‘Solo’ with locally adapted types to produce an

improved cultivar that has a lower requirement for fertilizer than does ‘Solo’. Work to develop

transgenic papaya germplasm with resistance to virus disease is currently in progress at the

University of Florida, Homestead (M. J. Davis, 2006, pers. comm.), but no material has yet

been approved for release to growers.
