4. Salinity stress symptoms include marginal and tip necrosis on leaves, stem and limb dieback,
reduced fruit size, fruit drop and tree death. Solutions to avoid or deal with salinity stress
include proper site selection, use of good quality water and access to sufficient water for lea-
ching (i.e., flushing soil profile periodically), and use of tolerant rootstocks (e.g., ’13-1’, ‘4-9’).
5. Wind stress symptoms include leaf damage/deformation and abscission, stem and limb
breakage, tree toppling, windthrow, stumping and tree death. Potential solutions to wind
stress include proper site selection and use of wind breaks, growing tolerant cultivar, facili-
tating deeper rooting for improved root anchoring and implementation of a regular pruning
program.
6. Mango trees growing in high pH, calcareous soils may develop nutrient deficiencies; especia-
lly iron, zinc, manganese, and magnesium. Potential solutions include use of tolerant roots-
tocks (e.g., ’13-1’, ‘4-9’, ‘No. 11’), frequent foliar applications of minor elements (Zn, Mn,
Mg) and application of chelated Fe materials.
