Potential to maintain trees at 4.5-7 m tall at most.
Pruning and shaping
Equipment needed includes pruning shears, loppers, hand or power driven pole saws, a plan
and a little dedication (i.e., follow through). The time to start an intensive pruning program
is immediately after planting a single stemmed tree. After trees are trained annual pruning is
required if tree size is to be maintained.
Year 1 and 2 (single stem)
1. Clip the main shoot at about 1 m. This will begin the process of building the main and se-
condary branches.
2. This initial cut will stimulate new shoots below the cut.
3. Select 3 to 4 that are evenly spaced around the stem and remove the others.
4. Remove any strongly upright shoots.
Year 1 and 2 and 3
1. When the new shoots reach about 50-60 cm in length either pinch off the end of the shoot
or prune it off. This in turn will stimulate more bud break (branching).
2. Again select only 3 or 4 new shoots, remove the rest. This process is repeated during the
1st and 2nd year.
