Thus, an individual’s conception of self is influenced by social, cultural, economic, institu-
tional and political factors (Borko, 2004; Farrell, 2012; Wright, 2010). As a result, PSTs’ expe-
riences, values, attitudes and beliefs influence teacher learning and professional development
(Freeman & Johnson, 1998; Johnson, 2009).
Service Learning is workplace focused and seeks to develop PSTs’ social conscience and
reciprocate to society (SEP, 2007: 29) whilst providing student teachers with opportunities to
address issues related to English Language Teaching through experiential and reflective lear-
ning. This concept is illustrated in the reflective learning cycle (National Youth Leadership
Council, 2010).
