According to the Mexican National Institute of Statistics and Geography (the Instituto Na-

cional de Estadística y Geografía or INEGI), at least 25% of the population in Chiapas is conside-

red to live in extreme poverty. This area, as most of the rest of the country, has been severely

affected by the general global economic crisis, record levels of unemployment, an educational
crisis and drug-related violence. Teaching underprivileged students presents PSTs with unique

challenges which ultimately influence their teacher learning and identity development.
